Paola Pezzi
b, 1963, Brescia, Italy
“I’m not able to track down one specific moment that marks the start of my artistic adventure because, the work, all the works I have done are part of a life journey, an attitude driven by necessity. Existential energy is at the base of everything, as much as my research; the idea of an original nucleus from the earth’s genesis remains at the root of my work. It evolves over the years, opening and changing, acquiring new energies, new sources, requiring new materials according to how I wish to express myself. A continuous and dynamic flow, in which life enters the world of art, and takes its form; where art becomes an experience of life, a statement about the world. A dialogue that takes form and emerges from my studio”.
Paola Pezzi lives and works in Milan, Italy. Student of the Accademia di Brera of Milan, she worked with master sculptor Luciano Fabro and Zeno Birolli. Deeply influenced by the philosophies of Arte Povera, Pezzi made her debut in the 80s with sculptures using contemporary materials such as polyurethane, foam rubber and various types of fabrics. In 2000, new sculptures and compositions using cork, wood, and felt, as well as materials belonging more to the traditional academy of fine art and the daily objects such as straws, matches of reels, toothpicks, fringes, cotton buds reinvigorated the artist’s work. Pezzi blurs the line between painting and sculpture, merging the two-dimensional and three-dimensional to create line and form using volume. Through her various experiments with materials and monotone shades, each work is a continuation of the last. Perpetually circling out from a centre, she continuously finds new ways to depict the same cycle of conception and evolution.
Paola Pezzi has exhibited regularly in Italy and abroad. Her works are also in the collections of Saatchi & Saatchi, the Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery of Palazzo Forti of Verona, the Civic Modern Art Gallery of Gallarate, The National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art of Roma, the collection Panza of Biumo, Varese, and at the headquarter of B.N.L Bank of Milan and Roma, the Banca Commerciale Italiana, and Banca Intesa.
